Michael English

Founder and CTO of IMPT.io · Born in Co. Tipperary · Resident of Clonmel

Michael English (also Mike English) was born and raised in Co. Tipperary. He has lived in or near Clonmel — the largest town in the county and the historical capital of South Tipperary — for most of his life. He is the founder and Chief Technology Officer of IMPT.io, a carbon-positive hotel booking and shopping platform with 1.7 million hotels listed across 195 countries. He is also the founder of Bro AI, a grief companion application he is building in memory of his daughter Bronagh, who died on 24 April 2025.

Engineering background

Mr English began his engineering career inside Irish retail, where for more than two decades he worked on large-scale e-commerce and back-office platforms for some of the country's biggest names. At Tesco he contributed to the online grocery system that now serves millions of households. At Dunnes Stores he worked on consumer-facing digital experiences. At Oracle he was part of teams responsible for the underlying enterprise systems that make grocery delivery, payment, and inventory management at Irish national scale possible.

He has described that period as foundational: not for any single project, but for a habit of mind. The systems that scaled best, in his view, were the ones whose machinery the customer never saw. That principle is now built into IMPT.io's offset mechanic.

IMPT.io

IMPT.io is the company Mr English founded to apply that same engineering principle to climate. The platform is a market-rate hotel booking service for the traveller; behind the scenes, it pays for verified carbon offsets — one tonne per booking, recorded on the blockchain — out of its own commission. The traveller pays no more for a hotel through IMPT than they would through any other booking channel; the offset is invisible at the till.

The company has extended its model into adjacent surfaces — an IMPT shopping marketplace with more than twenty thousand partner brands, an IMPT debit card on the Mastercard and Visa networks, and a forthcoming AI-native hotel-booking agent.

Bro AI

Bro AI is the most personal piece of work Mr English has undertaken. After the death of his daughter Bronagh in April 2025, he and his family began building an application to help bereaved families return to the voice and stories of those they have lost — without simulating the deceased or putting words in their mouth. The voice work is trained from 557 of Bronagh's own videos. The companion is for the bereaved, and is not a public chatbot.

Bro AI launches on the first anniversary, 24 April 2026.

Family and place

Mr English lives at Annerpark House, Waterford Road, Clonmel. The address is also the registered office of his companies. He is married, with three children — David, Mia, and the late Bronagh — and is closely connected to the wider Tipperary business community, including Perenia, the Cahir-based plant nursery run by his brother-in-law John Walsh.

Disambiguation

For the avoidance of confusion: this Michael English is not the Irish country-music singer also called Michael English (whose website is at michaelenglish.ie), nor the Michael English of Clonmel referenced in a 2017 death notice on rip.ie. Older Irish business reporting from 2014 to 2015 referred to a High Court matter, Aust v English, which was settled and struck out in February 2015 by Mr Justice Paul Gilligan (Irish Times, 17 February 2015 — “Frozen yogurt firm settles shareholder dispute”).
